June 24, 1995: Brownie is included in a map of historical treasures found in downtown Daytona Beach’s Riverfront Park

A customer at Brownie’s Dog Boutique and I were chatting about Brownie the Town Dog of Daytona Beach and she mentioned an old article from the 1980s that listed all the historical treasures of downtown Daytona Beach’s Riverfront Park – the park where Brownie the Town Dog of Daytona Beach was laid to rest. As she… Continue reading June 24, 1995: Brownie is included in a map of historical treasures found in downtown Daytona Beach’s Riverfront Park

Photo: Brownie sitting with the tourist in the 1950s

This photo is displayed on many internet sites and I think is the best photo of Brownie. It shows him in 1950s Daytona Beach doing what he loved to do: be with people. This is the colorized version. Notes: The Daytona Cab Company cabs of the 40s and 50s were so different from cars of… Continue reading Photo: Brownie sitting with the tourist in the 1950s

The most popular photo of Brownie the Town Dog of Daytona Beach

This is, by far, the most popular photo of Brownie. It appears to have been taken later in Brownie’s life, probably in the early 1950s, when Brownie started putting on weight from all the ice cream and steak that Beach Street merchants tended to feed him. Notes This photo is what I call the Brownie… Continue reading The most popular photo of Brownie the Town Dog of Daytona Beach

February 13, 1949: A Valentine to Brownie, the aging canine patriarch of Daytona Dogdom

On the day before Valentine’s Day, Fred Langworthy, wrote a Valentine to Brownie and to the people of Daytona Beach. “Stories about Brownie will be told in Daytona Beach long after the beloved Community Pet has gone to that Happy Hunting Ground where all dogs find their eternal rest.” Notes: Lots of stories showing how… Continue reading February 13, 1949: A Valentine to Brownie, the aging canine patriarch of Daytona Dogdom

December 27, 1951: A Christmas poem – and a dollar – is left for Brownie

“There is something mighty wholesome about a City whose people can pause in their busy Christmas season to remember an old and beloved dog, I always say.” Notes: Fred Langworthy, who often wrote about Brownie for the Daytona Beach News-Journal, had a sports column that often featured Brownie (I’m not really sure why). This is… Continue reading December 27, 1951: A Christmas poem – and a dollar – is left for Brownie

January 4, 1956: “A Good Dog” marker is laid on Brownie’s grave

Notes: Brownie died on October 31, 1954. The grave marker was put on his grave on January 4, 1956. That’s about 14 months that the city commission and Daytona Beach citizens talked about how to memorialize Brownie. By this point, the “new” Brownie, at the Post Office had been living there for about a year.… Continue reading January 4, 1956: “A Good Dog” marker is laid on Brownie’s grave

May 11, 1952: Brownie has heart worms again and needs more funds!

Notes: Heart worms were not treated as often in the 1950s as they are today, but Brownie was treated a few times. This particular treatment was a series of 14 shots and was rapidly draining his bank account. This article claims he’s 14 in 1952, so it’s getting clear that every reporter is guessing at… Continue reading May 11, 1952: Brownie has heart worms again and needs more funds!

June 1955: A Birdbath Instead Of A Grave Stone?

I’m not sure of the date of this editorial by Deborah D. Taylor of Baltimore, MD. It’s obviously 1955, but the date isn’t clear from the handwriting on this article. Most of the artifacts in the Halifax Historical Society are in folders and with handwriting on them that is not always clear. But I am… Continue reading June 1955: A Birdbath Instead Of A Grave Stone?
